Jennifer Jakobi, PhD, Associate Chair WWEST


Jenn is a Professor in the School of Health and Exercise Sciences. She specializes in exercise neuroscience. As Director of the Neuromuscular Healthy Exercise and Aging Lab (HEAL), she works towards understanding sex-specific age-related decline that contributes to greater loss of functional abilities in women with age. She is the founder of the Integrative STEM Team Advancing Networks of Diversity (iSTAND) and the NSERC Chair for Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) for BC and Yukon. She is passionate about creating equitable access for all people to explore the sciences and gain an appreciation for how science lives in all aspects of life. She is committed to increasing diversity across STEM fields through providing mentorship, and opportunities to encourage, explore, understand and empower change for underrepresented persons in STEM. Eli Haynes, STEM Outreach Coordinator, iSTAND

Eli completed his Bachelor’s degree in Human Kinetics at UBC Okanagan in December of 2017. Since then, he has been working for Dr. Jakobi as both a research assistant and STEM Outreach Education Coordinator as well completing his Master’s degree in Human Kinetics. Contact: eli.haynes@ubc.ca

Rebecca McCullough, STEM Coordinator, iSTAND

Rebecca has a Masters in Educational Leadership, as well as undergraduate degrees in education, and recreation/kinesiology.  She is grateful to be working with the iSTAND team in educating diverse and underrepresented populations, through STEM activities and alternate learning opportunities. Maxine van Zyl, Communications and Resource Design Assistant, iSTAND

Maxine is a fourth-year Psychology student assisting with the design of workshop and summer camp materials, social media campaigns and podcasts. Contact: mvzyl@mail.ubc.ca

Cori Calkins, STEM Outreach Instructor, iSTAND

Cori graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Human Kinetics degree. She is passionate about positive youth development in sport and STEM learning. Cori is currently researching how positive youth development in sport could apply to STEM learning. She wishes to continue studying positive youth development in order to enhance youth experiences in different disciplines. Cori works with the iSTAND program to educate and promote diversity in STEM.
